Holiday Inn
Bing Crosby stars in this 1942 film set at a holiday resort.  Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds are wonderful, but the Berlin score (including the song "White Christmas") is the real star.  Better than "White Christmas. "

Home Alone
The 1990 box office smash in which Christmas is incidental to Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, the 8-year-old mistakenly left home alone when his family goes to Europe for the holidays.   When two hopelessly bumbling burglars (hilariously played by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci) break into the house, Kevin devises all manner of ingenious ploys to foil their plans, some bordering on the sadistic.  Catherine O'Hara and John Heard are Kevin's frantic parents, but the obvious star of the film is Culkin, at his precocious best.

The Homecoming
Set on a Depression Christmas Eve in 1933, this heart-tugging story centers around the Waltons.  They're a rural American family preparing to celebrate Christmas together.   Though times are tough, love and sharing are abundant in this family.  An inspiring tale of love, hope and spirit, this deeply moving story goes far beyond the boundaries of time and place to reach out and touch everyone everywhere.  Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, Edgar Bergen, Cleavon Little, Ellen Corby, and Andrew Duggan as John Walton star in this award-winning drama that inspired the long-running vastly popular TV series "The Waltons".  Color, 1971.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Ever the nasty curmudgeon, the Grinch is bitter and unhappy at the thought of the local villagers having a grand time at their Christmas revels.  Disguised as Santa Claus, his dog posing as a reindeer, the Grinch raids the village and steals everything to do with Christmas, leaving the villagers wondering what kind of Christmas they'll have this year.   This 1966 classic is loved by all ages.

It's a Wonderful Life
It's a toss-up between this 1946 Frank Capra classic and "A Christmas Carol" as to which is most beloved and deserves to be hailed as "the" Christmas movie of all time.  Most cinema buffs would probably give the nod to Jimmy Stewart as the small-town family man who one day wishes he'd never been born--and gets his wish.   For 130 wonderful minutes, George Bailey is Everyman, Bedford Falls Anytown, USA.   Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Henry Travers (as everyone's favorite angel) also star.  Even more poignant in light of Stewart's recent death.   Enduring, immortal, to be seen again and again.
