The Best Christmas Books For Kids

The Christmas Alphabet

by Robert Sabuda
Who can resist opening a door or lifting a flap just to see what's inside? No one. And that's why this seasonal, alphabetical pop-up book has become such a Christmas favorite.  Beneath each lettered flap is an intricate three-dimensional paper cutout of a holiday-related object that starts with the same letter (A for angel, B for bell, C for candle). The cutouts, emerging from colorful squares, are all made of crisp white paper--creating an origami elegance. Yet the paper sculptures are decidedly joyful and unpredictable, like the exploding shreds of paper beside the title "unwrap" under the letter U. Robert Sabuda made his first pop-up book when he was 8 years old, but abandoned the art when he failed to figure out how to make the cyclone twirl in The Wizard of Oz.  Apparently, he's finally mastered the art of motion, since many of the pop-ups feature movements such as flight for the angel, and the tender joining of lips for the kiss of two reindeer. Sabuda has also mastered the art of whimsy, making The Christmas Alphabet, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Cookie Count seasonal staples in households of children young and old.

Merry Christmas, Maisy

by Lucy Cousins (Illustrator)
There's nothing like Christmas to put a little sparkle in your eyes--or around your house! Maisy is excited that Christmas is almost here--she bakes a special cake, buys and wraps presents for her friends, and decorates her house to within an inch of its life. Shiny stars and glittering tinsel deck Maisy's halls, and when the big day finally arrives, she and her friends are ready to celebrate in style.  Kids who loved Maisy in some of Lucy Cousins's other books about the truly delightful mouse, including Maisy's Pop-Up Playhouse, Maisy Goes to Bed, and Maisy Goes Swimming, will be tickled pink to find her latest interactive adventure on their bedside table, in the bookshelf, or under the Christmas tree. Readers lift the flaps and pull the tabs to discover all sorts of festive surprises, from a tray of cookies hot out of the oven to Maisy's toy panda snuggled under the bedcovers. This book has lots of color and loads of simple appeal.
