One of the most prolific New York City holiday traditions has to be the beautiful department store windows.

Each year designers transform these showplaces into miniature holiday worlds attracting passersby to gaze in awe...and hopefully do some shopping!

Macy's Christmas windows
Macy's window Our first store is Macy's Herald Square, home of "Santaland."

The holiday windows are unveiled Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 with an appearance by Kermit the Frog, their "official holiday frog-tographer."

This year's theme is the Muppets Take Manhattan as six elaborate windows feature the colorful and lovable cast of characters going to the same places that tourists visit such as the Statue of Liberty and Times Square as well as places New Yorkers call home. Macy's at Christmas
Lord & Taylor windows Probably the most elaborate and popular windows belong to Lord & Taylor. These windows literally stop traffic!

Thousands line up to Fifth Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets beginning November 12th, 2002 at 5:30pm.

The designers of Lord & Taylor's windows create extravagant scenes filled with animated figures, vehicles and other wonders of imagination.

This year's windows feature scenes from the beloved classic The Nutcracker.

Saks Fifth Avenue at Christmas Across from Rockefeller Center is Saks Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets.

The popular shopping stop of the fashion conscious brings beauty to the masses with its attractive holiday window displays.

Gaining the most attention because of its proximity to a certain large tree, this year's Saks Fifth Avenue windows are based on the story of Sleeping Beauty complete with mechanical dolls moving to the famous Tchaikovsky ballet!

The 2002 windows will be unveiled on Tuesday, November 12th at 5pm.

See if you can spot their popular "calendar" shopping bag around town!
